Women and Ayurveda; What You Should Know

In Ayurveda there is a vast knowledge about the number of diseases with their causes, symptoms and treatment. The principle of ayurvedic treatment is to remove the cause so that the disease can be eradicated completely from the body. Woman plays a very important role in family and as well as in the society, so her health is very important in all aspects of life. Anatomically and physiologically, male and female are different from each other, like this certain diseases are also different and vary from men to women.

Normally, an average woman’s life is divided into three stages: before puberty, puberty and menopause.

Most common diseases found in female are pre menstrual tension, amenorrhea, bed wetting, incontinence/bladder problem, urinary tract infection (UTI), lumbago, vaginal discharge, vaginal dryness, fluid retention, obesity, vertigo, migraine, pregnancy and motherhood, infertility, breast feeding, skin problems, etc.

Treatment in Ayurveda is very specifically depends upon the constitution of an individual and not according to the symptoms of a particular disease. Certain specific lifestyles, exercises and diet are prescribed for woman for the common diseases for females. These exercises are Pranayam, meditation, back stretching exercises specially Dhanur Asan and Bhujang Asan and brisk walking in the morning hours helps to strengthen the bones and muscles and also it reduces the risk of osteoporosis in coming time.

Pregnancy and motherhood is very important part of woman life. It is called as a new birth for a female. If proper care of a female has not been taken during pregnancy, it may be fatal. During antenatal period, Ayurveda has described diet, lifestyle and exercises according to the said months which help in reducing the complications of the pregnancy and the labor.

There are lots of benefit of yoga and deep breathing exercises which are as follows:

  • It reduces the fluid retention which is very common in last months
  • It helps in normal, easier and quicker labor
  • It helps in reducing morning sickness, nausea, mood swings and constipation
  • In post-natal care, it helps to restore uterus, abdomen, pelvic floor and body shape

The basic principle for a woman to keep herself fit and healthy is to have good quantity of water and milk, regular exercise and sound sleep for 6-7 hours on a routine basis.
