Whatever may be the case, it is possible to change the way you think. For anyone who is in a personal rut or a repetitively stressful situation, negativity comes naturally. Everyday stressors push many of us into the grey area of ‘losing control of my own thoughts’ that can become quite overwhelming. It is not very hard to change the way you think, but it does require effort.

There are two common ways to change the way you think. Affirmations and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy are both great tools.

While affirmations are self-healing tools that work best when you also become a part of a support group that keeps you accountable for any negative thoughts, CBT is done with a professional psychologist who is trained to help you achieve your goals in the best way possible.

Affirmations: Correcting Your Thoughts

It’s easy to lose yourself in negative thoughts. Affirmations can have a profound impact in your day to day life, as you yourself correct your own thinking.

Affirmations are nothing but short, positive sentences that you repeat over and over that can reshape your reality and the way you react to your immediate surroundings.

These can direct your conscious thoughts towards the mindset you wish you had, and help you break free of old negative mindset patterns.

If you are prone to negativity, jealousy and depression, repeating positive affirmations will break the natural cycle of your thought process, calm you down, and reinstate positive thoughts. Most of us feel frustrated and depressed when we don’t like the way we think, and that negativity seeps into other aspects of life to result in a full-blown panic attack. I benefitted hugely from the book Retrain Your Brain: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in 7 Weeks: A Workbook for Managing Depression and Anxiety.

Repeating affirmations to yourself in a private space allows you to harmonize your thoughts, reconnect with your inner soul, and achieve a state of calm — all of which are crucial to generating positive thoughts. Repeating the same affirmations over and over will strongly reinstate that idea into your subconscious mind, until and unless it comes naturally to you one day. I personally like to start my day with affirmations because the mind is at its fertile best in the morning and when I began on this journey, I read the book The Miracle Morning: The 6 Habits that Will Transform Your Life Before 8 AM.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Changing Your Thoughts

Cognitive behavioural therapy can help you better deal with your problems by teaching you to change the way you think and act out. While CBT will not cure your problems, it gently trains you to nudge your thoughts into a more controlled direction. When faced with the same stressful situation the next time, your CBT training will let you respond in a more positive and productive manner. Cognitive behavioural therapy works on the concept that our feelings, thoughts and physical reactions are all interlinked. Give in to negativity and it will affect all of these until you are trapped in a vicious cycle.

Control your thoughts, and improve the way you feel when overwhelmed or stressed. While CBT is generally used to cure a variety of mental disorders, it is also extremely helpful for those who find that everyday stressors are ruining the quality of their life and impacting their thought-process in many harmful ways.
